ABILENE, Texas — Whitman scored five runs over the final two innings to rally past Hardin-Simmons, 7-4, in the season opener on Friday afternoon at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco.
HSU scored two times in the seventh when Ryan Reagor and Marcus Uechi scored on a dropped pop up that would have ended the inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Whitman scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning when Moyes had another RBI single and Paul Heywood had an RBI single. A one-out hit by pitch and walk set the tone for the inning. Whitman added three runs in the ninth and the walk was again the culprit as three HSU relievers walked three batters. Jonny Chow had a two-run single in the inning and Heywood had another RBI single.
Eric Zamora started for the Cowboys and was solid over five and one-third innings. He scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run. Ryan Reagor took the loss, allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Alex Bradley, Sam Hallen and Kyle Barnett also worked in relief for the Cowboys.
Brett Lambert went six and one-third innings and struck out nine while allowing only one earned run. Sterling Spilinek earned the win in relief with two and two-third innings of two-hit one-run relief.
Uechi led the HSU offense with three of the 10 hits.
HSU is 0-1 on the year and Whitman is now 5-2 on the year. HSU will play Puget Sound on Saturday at 6 p.m.
