ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' baseball team scored four runs in the 11th inning to beat Sul Ross State 7-4 in American Southwest Conference action on Friday night at Kokernot Field in Alpine.
The Cowboys were frustrated offensively all night as HSU left 14 runners on base, including eight in scoring position. HSU left a runner in scoring position in the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th inning.
However, the Cowboys scored four times in the 11th inning for the win. Jay Hiller led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Taylor Berlin was intentionally walked and Troy Tarrant hit what looked to be a double play ball, but shortstop Jared Mosqueda kicked the ball into centerfield and Hiller scored. Berlin then scored on a RBI ground out by Andrew Rehling. Chris Matthews then sent a ball to left center and Ricardo Vera lost the ball and dropped it. Rehling scored and then Matthews scored when Vera had a throwing error after a Jon Finney single.
Sul Ross State added an unearned run in the 11th but James Simmons closed the game out with three and one-third innings of relief. He allowed only one unearned run and struck out five batters.
HSU took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when LeJuan Edwards had a two-run single with two outs. It stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Sul Ross State's Brennyn Smith hit a two-run home run with two outs to right field to break up a shutout by Sam Walker.
The Cowboys regained the lead in the seventh with a run. Weeks had a one-out single and he moved to third on a Berlin single. He scored on a Tarrant fielder's choice. SRSU tied the game in the seventh with a solo home run by Bill Tom Milburn.
HSU is now 23-8 on the year and 10-3 in league play. Sul Ross State fell to 14-14 overall and 6-7 in ASC West play. The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
