Sanderson was an All-American player in his time at HSU and is still the all-time leader in tackles for loss and ranks second all- time in tackles (403). He was a three-time first team All-American Southwest Conference selection and was the 2001 ASC Defensive Player of the Year. He also earned All-American honors as a senior.

During the 2000 regular season game with Mary Hardin-Baylor, Sanderson had 20 tackles in the Cowboys win. In the 2000 NCAA playoff victory over Western Maryland, Sanderson led all players with ten tackles and helped propel a defense that kept WM to only 27 yards rushing and had only 264 yards of total offense. HSU advanced to the NCAA Semifinals that season.

After leaving HSU, Sanderson coached at Seguin High School, Del Valle and Hawley. He spent one season as the linebackers coach for HSU in 2007. He returned to high school coaching in 2009 at Levelland as an assistant and is now in his second season as the head football coach and athletic director.
