In 21 seasons with Hardin-Simmons, Alan Wartes and his offense established itself as one of the elite in the nation. He was instrumental in building the program in 1990 and sent teams to the national playoffs 11 times. Two of his teams advanced to the national semifinals in 1993 and 2000.
The Cowboys were in the top 20 in the nation in offense 12 times and on three different occasions led the nation in offense. Coaches from all levels of play take pages out of his HSU playbook and his Air-it-Out passing camps impacted thousands of young men every summer.
His HSU quarterbacks threw 464 touchdown passes and for more than 54,000 yards. Wartes coached four All-American quarterbacks; Tom Enloe, Kevin Beam, Todd Baumann and Dustin Proctor, as well as 10 All-American receivers.
He coached 152 offensive players to all-conference honors at HSU, including nine ASC or TIAA Players of the year.
