Five Cowgirls and Coaching Staff Earn ASC Accolades

RICHARDSON, Texas -Five Hardin-Simmons volleyball players and the coaching staff have been given awards by the American Southwest Conference in a vote by the league coaches.  

Hardin-Simmons University senior middle blocker Kaela Parnell won the most valuable player award in the West Division and earned a spot on the prestigious eight-player all-conference team to highlight the 2009 American Southwest Conference volleyball awards, the ASC office announced on Tuesday (Nov. 10).

Parnell was named ASC West Division Most Valuable Player after leading the league with a .356 hitting percentage and an averages of 3.67 kills and 4.42 points per set. She also propelled the Cowgirls to the West title and a trip to the conference title match.

Parnell was joined on the ASC All-Conference team by Texas-Dallas junior middle blocker Jessica Nassau and junior setter Niki Calverley and senior outside hitter Kyleigh Irish, Texas Lutheran University senior middle blocker Jamie Jahns and junior outside hitter Jessica Stetler, McMurry University junior middle blocker Terah Brown and Schreiner senior middle blocker Tiffany Miller.

Hardin-Simmons outside hitter Madison Reyes was named ASC West Division Freshman of the Year and to the ASC West Division First team. Seniors Kaela Parnell and Chelsie Fowler also received ASC West Division first-team honors.

Junior libero Gracen Harris was named to the ASC West Division second team and senior Sam Lucien was named honorable mention West Division.

Head coach Sabrina Bingham and assistants Nicole Childers and Kim Poorman received ASC West Co-Coaching staff of the year along with Schreiner's Philip White and Joe Anders. Bingham and company led the Cowgirls to a 22 win season.

The Cowgirls went 22-7 on the year and advanced to the ASC Tournament for the fifth straight year.
