ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ volleyball
team completed a regular season sweep of crosstown-rival McMurry
with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 win in American Southwest Conference
action at Kimbrell Arena on Wednesday night.
The first game was tied at 20 when the Cowgirls received
back-to-back kills from seniors Kaela Parnell and Chelsie Fowler
and two by Diona Massey to make it 24-22 and the game ended with
back-to-back service errors.
In the second game, McMurry led 19-15, but three kills by Parnell
and one by Massey fueled a 7-1 run by the Cowgirls, giving HSU a
22-20 lead. Parnell and Fowler closed out the game with kills to
give HSU a 2-0 lead.
The game was tied at seven, but the Cowgirls rolled off nine
straight points. Madison Reyes and Parnell each had a kill in the
rally and Kayla Dotson had two aces. McMurry had three hitting
errors, two ball-handling errors and a setting error in the
run.
McMurry battled back to close it to 23-21, but an attack error by
McMurry and a kill by Parnell closed out the match.
In her final career match against McMurry, Parnell led the
Cowgirls with 12 kills. Reyes had 10 kills for HSU. Sam Lucien and
Erin Davis had 19 and 16 assists respectively for the Cowgirls.
Gracen Harris led the defense with 14 digs.
M.J. Vickers led McMurry with 10 kills and the Cowgirls limited
All-American Terah Brown to seven kills in the match.
HSU is now 13-5 on the year and 10-2 in American Southwest
Conference action. McMurry fell to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in league
play. The two teams will co-host the ASC Crossover in Abilene. HSU
will play Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at 7 p.m.
