Lewis Throws Gem At UMHB
LEWISVILLE, Texas — Senior righthander Megann Lewis didn't want her career to end and she took matters into her own hands as she tossed a two-hitter and struck out a career-best 13 batters as Hardin-Simmons beat Mary Hardin-Baylor 1-0 in an elimination contest in the American Southwest Conference Tournament at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park.
Lewis worked out of both potential scoring threats by UMHB. In the fifth inning Austin McCormick was at third after a walk, sac bunt and stolen base, but Lewis threw a pitch that skipped to the backstop. It bounced perfectly to catcher Taylor Namey who threw to Lewis to cut down MCCormick at the play.
In the sixth inning, UMHB loaded the bases with two outs, but she got Hannah White to foul out to end the threat.
HSU had several scoring chances, but left 11 runners on base including five in the first two innings. HSU scored its only run in the second when Cera Beasley singled and moved to second on a walk and to third on a wild pitch. She then came home to score on a passed ball by Chandler Henson, following a Mac Clay walk.
Kelsey Evans and Taylor Namey had two hits each for the Cowgirls and Kaysie Creech had both hits for UMHB.
Lewis is now 13-9 on the year and White fell to 16-4 on the year. She allowed eight eights and walked four to go along with nine strikeouts.
The Cowgirls and are now 24-18 on the year and UMHB falls to 28-14. HSU will now turn around and play the winner of the Concordia-Mississippi College game at 6:30 this evening in another elimination game.
