ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' will be going for its 15th straight American Southwest Conference title this weekend when it hosts the ASC Championship Tournament at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The Cowgirls come into the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. HSU advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 win over LeTourneau on Tuesday. HSU will host UT Tyler (11-4-1) on Friday at 11 a.m. in the first semifinal of the day.
HSU and UT Tyler have played in five straight ASC Tournament with the Cowgirls winning them all. Four of those five, including each of the last three years, have been in the championship game. The Cowgirls won the regular season meeting 1-0 on Sept. 28 in Tyler.
The Cowgirls are ranked fifth nationally and are No. 1 in the West region rankings.
Kenne Kessler leads the Cowgirls' offense with 32 goals on the year. She has scored at least one goal in all but one game this season. She also leads the nation in goals. Josey Meyer leads the nation with 21 assists on the year.
Caitlin Christiansen has allowed just three goals this season and has a 0.23 goals against average. She plays behind a very talented back line that has allowed just four goals on the year and teams average just over four shots per game.
Kirsten Parrish is second on the team with 11 goals. She leads the defense as a center back and is also a weapon on set pieces.
The Cowgirls are making their 20th appearance in the ASC Championship Tournament and have an all-time record of 35-1-3 and have won 17 of the 19 tournaments that have been contested. UT Tyler or UT Dallas has been the runner-up every year since 2004.
Mary Hardin-Baylor (15-2-1) and UT Dallas (16-3) will square off in the other semifinal at 2 p.m. on Friday. The winner of the two semifinals will play for the championship at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for non-HSU students. HSU students are FREE with a student ID.
