Cowgirls Pull Away Late For Win At UMHB

BELTON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons pulled away down the stretch to defeat Mary Hardin-Baylor, 69-60, in American Southwest Conference West Division action Thursday night at the Mayborn Center in Belton.

The game started off slow for the Cowgirls as they trailed 10-4 with 10:15 to go in the half, but HSU went on a 9-1 run to take the lead 13-11 at the 6:13 mark of the first half. It went back and forth and UMHB led 25-21 at halftime.

The Cru pushed the lead to 29-21, before HSU came back with a 10-0 run to take a 31-29 lead. The Cowgirls two seniors had all 10 points in the run with Cisneroz scoring seven and Hodges capping the run with an old-fashioned 3-point play.

The lead went back and forth and UMHB led 48-43 with 6:58 to play but the Cowgirls scored six straight points. Ashley Allen scored a lay-up and then Cisneroz stole the inbounds pass and was fouled hit both free throws and then Allen stole the next inbounds pass and made the layup to give HSU a 49-48 lead with 6:31 to play.

The lead changed seven times and there were two ties the rest of the way, before HSU took a 59-56 lead on a Cisneroz layup with 2:26 to play. It was 61-58 when Hodges hit the dagger for the Cowgirls as she buried a 3-pointer in the left wing to make it 64-58. HSU was able to hold on down the stretch at the free throw line.

Cisneroz led the Cowgirls with 21 points and Shelby Hodges had 12 points and 12 rebounds, with all 12 points coming in the second half. Allen scored all 10 of her points in the second half.

UMHB was led by freshman Landie Thompson, who posted a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

HSU improved to 19-5 with the win and 16-4 in ASC action. UMHB fell to 14-10 overall and 12-8 in league play. The Cowgirls will play at Concordia on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Austin.
