Cowgirls Fall To No. 2 Howard Payne
Feb. 2, 2008
BROWNWOOD, Texas - Hardin-Simmons women's basketball team gave a great effort, but No. 2 Howard Payne pulled away down the stretch and defeated the Cowgirls 67-51 in American Southwest Conference action at the Brownwood Coliseum on Saturday.
The Cowgirls held Howard Payne All-American Meia Daniels in check for most of the game limiting her to 15 points, but HSU had no answer for the Lady Jackets next best option as Stacey Blalock had 28 points, including a 14-for-15 effort at the free throw line.
HSU only trailed 26-20 at halftime, and HSU was hanging around before a 9-0 run took the HPU lead from 41-34 to 50-34. Seven of the points in the run came from Daniels.
HSU never got on track offensively as they shot just 32 percent in the game and turned the ball over 22 times. The Cowgirls did a good job on the defensive end, limiting the Lady Jackets to 37.5 percent shooting.
The difference in the game came at the free throw line as HPU hit 30-of-36 and the Cowgirls hit 15-of-21.
Rachel Cisneroz and Lindsey Newcombe each had 11 points to pace the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls are now 15-4 on the year and 12-3 in ASC West action. Howard Payne improved to 19-0 overall and 15-0 in league play. It was also the Lady Jackets 31st straight win at the Brownwood Coliseum. HSU returns home on Thursday for a game with Sul Ross State
