Cowgirls Hold Off Sul Ross State

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team held off a late Sul Ross State rally and went on to win 74-63 in American Southwest Conference action at the Gallegos Center in Alpine on Thursday night.
The Cowgirls jumped to a 11-2 lead, but SRSU came right back and tied the game at 14-14. It was the only time the Cowgirls did not lead the entire game, but SRSU hung around throughout.
HSU led by as many as 14 points in the first half and led by as many as 12 in the second half. SRSU cut the deficit to 68-62 with 2:48, but the Cowgirls closed the game out down the stretch.
HSU improved to 15-3 on the year and 12-2 in ASC action. Sul Ross State fell to 6-11 overall and 5-9 in league play. The Cowgirls travel to Brownwood on Saturday for a game with No. 2 Howard Payne at 1 p.m.
Ashley Allen led the Cowgirls with 20 points, Rachel Cisneroz added 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Kristen Harris added 10 points for the Cowgirls.
Nitra Woods led Sul Ross State with 19 points and Morgan Johnson added 15.
