UMHB Rallies By Hardin-Simmons
The Cowgirls came out blazing from the field in the early going and led 16-4 and then 30-11 with 8:20 to play in the first half. Coco Cartwright hit three 3-pointers in the early going and the Cowgirls were shooting almost 70 percent at the time.
From then on UMHB took control of the game and cut the deficit to seven on a couple of different occasions in the first half and HSU led 45-37 at halftime.
HSU led 62-55 with 11:43 to play on an Angela Newcombe jumper. UMHB then went on a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 65-4 on a Miranda Shorter jumper. The biggest lead for The Cru was six points on three different occasions the last at 79-73 with 1:47 to play.
HSU received a basket by Kara Looten and then two free throws by Alexis Popelar to make it 79-77 with 1:18 to play. Gabby Guzman had a jumper for UMHB and Popelar scored a layup. UMHB turned it over with :22 to play and HSU got a last second chance to tie it but Jasmine Lewis' shot rimmed out.
Popelar led four Cowgirls in double figures with 19 points. Newcombe had 17 points and 10 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the year. Cartwright had 16 points and hit an HSU season-high four 3-pointers. Kara Looten added 14 points.
Brittany Zamora led UMHB with 21 points and nine assists. Guzman added 16 points off the bench. UMHB had 25 assists on 29 made baskets in the game.
The Cowgirls are now 11-11 on the year and 9-9 in ASC action. UMHB improved to 5-17 overall and 4-14 in ASC play. HSU will play at conference co-leader Concordia on Saturday in Austin.
