HSU To Compete in Track and Field in 2008-09

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons University is proud to
announce that it will add track and cross country for men and women
to its intercollegiate athletic lineup for the 2008-09 season.
HSU hired Rodeny Smith as the new coach for the program in
February. Smith is a longtime track and cross country coach and
most recently was the head coach in Uvalde. He has collegiate
coaching experience at Abilene Christian and David Libscombe
University in Nashville.
A new track is being built for the program next to the soccer and
softball fields on the Grape Street Complex. The track teams will
be housed in the new fieldhouse that was completed this summer.
“We are excited to add track to our lineup,” said HSU
athletic director John Neese. “We see many benefits to adding
track and it has been a long process to get to this point. We think
Coach Smith will have us competing at high level in a short amount
of time.”
Track and Cross Country are the first sport added at HSU since
softball was added for the 2004 season.
HSU last had a track team in 1968, before dropping the program from
the sport lineup.
