Salas, Shaughnessy Earn Preseason Honors

RICHARDSON, Texas - Haridn-Simmons' David Salas and Ryan Shaughnessy have been picked the American Southwest Conference's preseason offensive and defensive players of the year and the Cowboys have been selected fourth in the preseason poll in voting conducted by the league's coaches.

Salas, a junior forward from Abilene won the preseason award for the second straight season. He scored 11 goals and had six assists in 2004 and was an all-ASC first-team and all-South Central Region selection.

Shaughnessy had a 1.25 goals against average as a junior and had five shutouts. He was also all-ASC and all-South Central region. He is the ASC's all-time leader in goals against average for a career at 0.94.

The Cowboys who went 11-7-2 last season and advanced to the semifinals of the ASC Tournament return a nucleus of 20 lettermen and 12 former starters, including eight that started last year and four others that are back after injury or time away from the team.

UT-Tyler, who is unable to win the ASC Tournament, was picked as the favorite, Defending champion UT-Dallas was second in the voting and HSU was three points behind McMurry in fourth place. Austin College, Ozarks, Schreiner, Mississippi College, Texas Lutheran, LeTourneau, East Texas Baptist, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Louisiana College and Concordia-Austin round out the poll.
