Cowboys One Win From ASC Regular-Season Title
KERRVILLE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team is one win away from claiming the No. 1 seed in the American Southwest Conference Championship next weekend, after it defeated Schreiner 3-1 in ASC play Friday afternoon in Kerrville.
After a scoreless first half, the Cowboys wasted no time in the second half taking the lead as Estevan Arbaiza found the back of the net :42 into the second half.
Schreiner came back to tie the game just over a minute later and it was 1-1 until the 63rd minute when the Cowboys' Isaiah Hicks scored to make it 2-1. Chris Hunter put the game away in the 84th minute with a goal off an assist from Arbaiza.
The win pushed the Cowboys to 10-4-4 overall and 9-1-2 in league play. HSU will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament and regular-season champion with a win in its 3 p.m. game with Texas Lutheran on Saturday. Schreiner fell to 2-9-4 overall and 2-7-3 in ASC play.
If the Cowboys win on Saturday it will be their first outright regular-season title since a West Division title in 2001. HSU will not be able to host the conference tournament by ASC rules this season, as the HSU women have earned the right to host as well. The women get priority in even years and the men's in odd years and both teams cannot host the tournament by conference by-laws.
