Cowboys Claim Alamo City Classic

Cowboys Claim Alamo City Classic

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Hardin-Simmons junior Luke Smith made a birdie on the 17th hole to give the HSU men's golf team its first team title since 2003 on Tuesday afternoon at the Alamo City Classic.

The tournament was played at the par-71, 6,699-yard Quarry Golf Club in San Antonio. HSU had a three-stroke lead going into the day and had a seven-shot lead with everyone having between two and three holes to play. An unfortunate break on No. 18 lead to a nine for Aaron Errico, and it tightened the team race.

Errico and Smith were the only two Cowboys left on the course and Errico rebounded with a clutch par on the difficult first hole leaving Smith with just holes No. 17 and 18 to play. They were the two hardest ranked holes on the course.

The 17th is a par-4 with hazards down both the left and right. Smith hammered a 2-iron down the right side of the fairway and had 155 yards left to the hole. Into the wind, he hit a knock down 8-iron to 15 feet, leaving a left to right putt that he buried for the birdie.

He then backed it up with a par on the long par-5 18th. Smith finished third overall in the tournament after rounds of 74 and 71. He was five shots behind Robby Evans of the University of Dallas who shot a sizzling 6-under par 65 for the win.

Matt Jouett finished tied for fourth for the Cowboys with a 74-73-147. Errico finished tied for 15th after rounds of 76 and 77. Nick Vella shot 77-78-155 and Chris Rorie improved six shots from the first round to the second and shot an 85-79-164.

The University of Dallas made a push at the Cowboys but never overtook HSU for the lead, although the team race was tied. At one point in the round, the Crusaders were 7-under par and they eventually finished with a 312-289-601 total. The Cowboys shot 301-299-600 for the first team title since the 2003 District 6 title in El Paso.

Trinity and Texas Lutheran finished tied for third, Webster finished fifth, Schreiner was sixth, LeTourneau placed seventh and Texas Lutheran B rounded out the field in eighth.

The Cowboys will host the Abilene Intercollegiate next Monday and Tuesday at Diamondback Golf Club.
