TUNICA, Miss. – Hardin-Simmons' men's golf team rebounded from a slow start in the first round with a strong second round and moved up four spots to 14th at the Rhodes College Fall Classic at the par-72, 7,125-yard Tunica National Golf Club in Tunica, Miss.
Junior Luke Smith led the Cowboys' effort with a 75-69-144. He is tied for 14th place overall. He recorded six birdies in his second round and shot a three-under par 69. Smith destroyed the par-5 holes on the day going five-under par, which was the third best in the field. He led the Cowboys with nine birdies on the day.
Sophomore Matt Jouett shot 76 in the first round. He responded with a career-best 70 in the second round and is tied for 23rd at 146. Aaron Errico shot 76-77 for a 153 total. Nick Vella shot 82 in his first collegiate round and came back with a 77 in the second round. Michael Speck rounded out the lineup with an 82-79-161.
Emory University leads the tournament with an eight-under par 568 total. The Eagles had rounds of 283 and 285 on Sunday. Southwestern is in second place with a 574 and Texas-Tyler is in third place with a 579 total.
The Cowboys were in 18th in the 19-team field after the first round 309, but HSU moved up four spots with the 293 total in the second round to 14th place.
The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
