ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' football team dominated early and again late as the Cowboys went on the road to defeat Howard Payne, 42-23, Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.
Hsu jumped out of the gates with a 21-0 lead and moved it to 28-7, before Howard Payne scored 16 unanswered to make it 28-23 with 5:53 to go in the third quarter. After that, HSU dominated allowing only 39 yards an on points, while scoring 14 more to ice the game.
Quinton Jones, who had a career-day with 174 yards rushing on a workmanlike 24 carries, capped the Cowboys' 13-play, 79-yard opening drive with a 18-yard touchdown run. He appeared to be down in the middle of the line, but broke a pair of tackles and sprung free up the middle.
On HPU's next possession Cody Deaver picked off the first of two Adam Johnson passes he would pick on the day to set the Cowboys up at the HPU 49. On the first play the Cowboys ran a reverse to Mychal Carrillo, who was wide open and scored from 49 yards out. The Cowboy defense forced a quick three and out to set the offense up again.
This time quarterback Jordan Neal hit Carrillo on a deep pass and Carrillo broke a tackle and went 66 yards for a score and the Cowboys led 21-0.
Howard Payne came right back with a touchdown of their own on a Chris Jackson 7-yard touchdown pass from Adam Johnson. Justin Greene scored on a 1-yard run after Rob Galusha's interception set the Cowboys up at the 11-yard line. HPU marched the field and Brandon Tolbert scored on a 9-yard pass from Johnson at the 2:24 mark of the first half. Jacob Morrison blocked the PAT to make it 28-20.
A Jordan Bullard 25-yard field goal inched the Jackets to 28-23 with 5:53 to play in the third. After that it was all Quinton Jones. He had 59 yards on six carries in the Cowboys last possession of the third quarter. He finished the drive with a 35-yard TD to make it 35-23 with 1:08 to play in the third.
In the Cowboys' final scoring drive Jones had 30 more yards. Neal ended the drive with a 16-yard run. The drive was a backbreaker for Howard Payne as the Cowboys methodically went 72 yards in 10 plays took 5:17 off the clock.
Will Galusha had eight catches for 107 yards. Carrillo had six catches for 92 yards and touchdown and had two rushes for 54 yards and another score. Neal was 24-for-35 with 265 yards and a touchdown and an interception.
The Cowboys rolled up 539 yards in 74 plays. The Cowboy defense limited the Jackets to 307 yards and forced four turnovers. Eric Daniels had 11 tackles for the Cowboys.
HSU is now 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in league play. HPU fell to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in league play with their fourth straight loss. The Cowboys host Sul Ross State for homecoming Oct. 28 at 2 p.m.
