ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team moved to 7-1 on the year with a 7-1 win over Southwestern on Homecoming at Shelton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After a 13-play, 55-yard drive for Southwestern on its opening possession ended in a missed field goal, HSU went 76 yards in six plays for a touchdown. HSU appeared to be going for a short field goal when Colten Kent, the holder, ran eight yards for a score on fourth down.
Southwestern tied the game in the second quarter when it went on a 16-play, 99-yard drive that took 8:44 of the clock and ended with a Frederick Hoover 2-yard touchdown run.
HSU put the game away in the fourth quarter when Turner hit Woody Watson on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 2:23 to play.
Turner was 15-for-22 for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Jaquan Hemphill ran for 90 yards for the Cowboys. Frederick Hoover had 126 yards rushing and was 12-for-24 for 126 yards passing.
The Cowboys are 7-1 overall and 6-1 in ASC action. HSU will host Belhaven for senior day next Saturday at 1 p.m. Southwestern fell to 4-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
