Cowboys Fall To Crosstown Rival

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team fell 83-78 to crosstown rival McMurry on Thursday night in American Southwest Conference action at Kimbrell Arena.

The first half was tight throughout and the Cowboys took a 35-32 lead into halftime.

In the second half, McMurry pushed out to a 59-51 lead, which was its biggest advantage in the game at the 13:12 mark. The Cowboys hurt themselves at the free throw line going 16-for-26 which never allowed them to get all the way over the hump.

Ryan Chaney split a pair of free throws with 3:01 to play and it narrowed the game to 71-69. The War Hawks responded by pushing its lead back to 78-71. HSU had one last push. Caleb Spoon was fouled making a 3-pointer and made the free throw to cut the deficit to 78-75. Spoon added another 3-pointer with :16 to play after Luke Stephenson had hit a pair of free throws. HSU would get no closer.  

Spoon led the Cowboys with 24 points and Joe Hoeup and Keilyn Nance each had 13 points and Nance led the Cowboys with nine rebounds.

LaRandall Scroggins had 24 points and nine rebounds for McMurry and Zacc Carter added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The game was the first between the head coaches - Matt Brackett of HSU and Zach Pickelman of McMurry. They were teammates at HSU.   

HSU is now 7-12 on the year and 5-7 in conference play. McMurry fell to 6-12 overall and is also 5-7 in league play. HSU is off until next Thursday when it plays at Concordia.
