ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team used a strong effort on the boards and a strong shooting effort to defeat Mary Hardin-Baylor 90-86 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex.
HSU jumped out to a 32-20 lead with 6:10 to play in the half but the Cru answered with a 28-10 run to close the half and take a 48-42 lead.
In the second half, the Cowboys overcame an eight-point deficit and retook the lead 56-55 on a Caleb Spoon 3-pointer with 16:08 to play. It stayed close the rest of the way. Jerod Martin came off the bench and hit a huge 3-pointer with 7:14 to play to give the Cowboys a 72-71 lead.
Joe Hoeup hit a 3-pointer with 3:21 to play to give the Cowboys a six-point lead. The Cowboys were able to hold the Cru off down the stretch by going 6-of-8 at the free throw line in the final :37.
HSU was 29-of-34 at the free throw line in the game and the Cru went 14-for-23. The undersized Cowboys outrebounded the Cru 38-31 in the game.
Hoeup led the Cowboys with 25 points, Nance added 19 and Caleb Spoon and Keenan Holdman added 14 points each for HSU. Holdman also added six rebounds, six assists two steals and a block against his former team.
Demarius Cress led UMHB with 22 points and Kendal Little added 12 points.
HSU is now 5-10 on the year and 3-4 in ASC play. Mary Hardin-Baylor is now 11-5 overall and 4-4 in conference action. The Cowboys will host Concordia on Saturday at 2 p.m. in their next action.
