COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team earned a hard-fought 84-81 overtime win over Colorado College on Saturday evening in the final game of the Pikes Peak Holiday Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo.
HSU is now 4-8 on the year and the game closes out non-conference play. The Cowboys will return home to play four straight conference games, beginning with a 7:30 game against East Texas Baptist on Thursday.
The Tigers (5-6) opened up a 24-14 lead in the early going of the game, but the Cowboys responded with an 11-2 run. The game was never more than a six-point margin the rest of the way.
HSU trailed 46-40, but used a 10-2 run to take a 50-48 lead with 10:17 remaining. Chris Barrett had three layups in the run. CC went ahead 68-65, but a Caleb Spoon 3-pointer knotted the game at 68 with 2:40 to play.
The Cowboys led 74-71 with :37 to play but John Hatch hit a 3-pointer to tie it for the Tigers with :23 to play.
HSU held for the final shot, but Joe Hoeup's contested layup fell off the rim to send the game to overtime. In overtime, C.J. Rice hit a driving layup after a Barrett steal and the Cowboys never trailed.
Spoon finished the night with 32 points and hit six 3-pointers. Barrett added 16 points, five steals, four assists and no turnovers in 41 minutes at the point.
CooXooEli Black had a huge night for the Tigers with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Hatch added 17 and Eric Houska had 16 points and seven assists.
Spoon was named the tournament's MVP and Joe Hoeup was named to the all-tournament team.
