ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team won its second straight game with an 85-80 win over Schreiner in non-conference action at the Mabee Complex on Friday night.
The win avenged an earlier loss to the Mountaineers in Kerrville on Nov. 25. The Cowboys have won three of the last four games.
HSU used a 10-2 run in the first half to open up a 15-7 lead. HSU kept the lead the rest of the first half and even pushed it out as many as 12 points at 35-23 and the Cowboys led 41-36 at halftime.
In the second half, Schreiner eventually tied the game on a couple of occasions but was never able to take the lead. With the game tied at 49, HSU used a quick 7-0 run to push the lead to 56-49 and the Cowboys never trailed in the second half.
The Cowboys had a balanced attack in the game as Joe Hoeup and Keenan Holdman each scored 19 points. Chris Barrett just missed a triple-double with 12 points, nine assists and nine rebounds. Caleb Spoon and Ryan Chaney each had nine points and both hit timely 3-pointers to keep the Mountaineers at a distance.
Keenan Gumbs led Schreiner with 24 points and nine rebounds. Josh Bashford added 12 points and Matthew Rindahl scored 11 points.
HSU hit 13-of-29 from 3-point range in the game and also went 20-of-25 at the free throw line.
The Cowboys are now 3-5 on the year and will host Texas Lutheran at 7:30 on Saturday. Schreiner fell to 2-4 on the year.
