Cowboys Fall To Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’
men’s basketball team continued its defensive woes and
dropped its sixth game in seven outings, falling 82-71 to Sul Ross
State, Saturday afternoon at the Gallego Center in American
Southwest Conference action.
The Cowboys never led in the contest as Sul Ross State used its
size and height advantage to take an early 13-point lead. HSU
played the game without top interior player Terrence Willis, who
was serving a suspension. Without Willis, SRSU scored most of its
points within about five of the basket. The Lobos shot 56 percent
in the game.
Sul Ross State held its biggest lead at 64-43 with 8:48 to play,
but the Cowboys had a late flurry to cut the deficit to nine at
74-65. Rob Yeatts hit four 3-pointers in the run, but the Cowboys
had built too big of a deficit to overcome.
Mark Schlott led the Cowboys with 18 points. Yeatts had 16 points,
Steven Wesley 14 and Casey Riddle 10 HSU.
Filiberto Torres led the way for Sul Ross State with 17 points,
Andy Hulsey had 15 points and Abraham Ely had 13 points.
HSU fell to 7-16 overall and to 6-13 in ASC play. Sul Ross State
improved to 8-14 on the year and to 8-11 in league play. HSU will
close out its season next weekend at Schreiner and Texas
Lutheran.
