Willis Has 22 As Cowboys Win Third Straight

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’
men’s basketball team won its third straight game with an
85-73 win over Sul Ross State in American Southwest Conference
action at the Mabee Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Terrence Willis scored 16 of his 22 points in the second
half and senior Rob Yeatts scored all 12 of his points in the
second half as the Cowboys were able to pull away down the
stretch.
HSU led by as many as nine points early in the first half but SRSU
cut the deficit to 33-31 with 2:19 to play in the half. Casey
Riddle then scored seven straight points over a minute span to make
it 40-31 and the Lobos hit a 3-pointer to make it 40-34 at
halftime.
In the second half, the Cowboys pounded the ball inside to Willis
and the Cowboys quickly built the lead to 11 points at 53-42 with
15:54 to play. SRSU came right back with a 10-2 run to make it
55-52. The Cowboys, who had been subbing five in and five out, went
back with its starting lineup and the Cowboys were able to push the
lead to 71-59.
The Cowboys led by as many as 14 points on a couple of occasions
down the stretch.
Riddle had 16 points for the Cowboys and Steven Wesley had 11. The
two combined to go 11-for-16 with 10 assists and eight rebounds
from the point guard position.
Jimmy Martinez had 15 points to pace Sul Ross State.
The Cowboys moved to 6-10 on the year and to 5-7 in ASC action. Sul
Ross State fell to 4-12 overall and 4-9 in league play. HSU is in
fourth place in the ASC West standings. HSU plays on the road next
week at Concordia and Mary Hardin-Baylor, the two teams directly
ahead of them in the standings.
