Cowboys Fall To Schreiner

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’
men’s basketball team dropped its seventh straight game with
a 72-70 home loss to Schreiner in American Southwest Conference
action at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowboys allowed Schreiner to get off to a hot start in the
first half as the Mountaineers shot 51.5 percent from the field in
the first half and they led 44-35 at halftime. The Mountaineers
pushed the lead to 14 in the second half before the Cowboys made a
late push, but came up short.
HSU did itself in at the free throw line as they made only 15-of-26
free shots and missed five front ends of 1-and-1’s.
The Cowboys had cut the deficit to 55-53 on a Carlos Singer follow
with 8:52 to play, but Schreiner went on a 10-2 run to make it
65-55 with 3:20 to play. HSU cut it down to three at 70-67 on a
Singer 3-point play and then Singer hit a 3-pointer with .02
seconds to play to cut the deficit to two points.
HSU limited the Mountaineers to 7-for-25 shooting in the second
half, but SU hit 13-of-18 free throws. HSU also hit just 3-of-20
3-pointers in the game. Schreiner outrebounded HSU 47-37.
Terrence Willis led the Cowboys with 22 points and Singer had 19.
Steven Wesley had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Schreiner was led by Riley Battle with 18 and Chris Jones-Conyers
had 16 points off the bench.
It was the first time in 10 games that Schreiner has beaten the
Cowboys. HSU fell to 3-10 on the year and to 2-7 in league play.
Schreiner improved to 2-11 on the year and 2-7 in league play. HSU
will host Texas Lutheran on Saturday at 3 p.m.
