Former Cowboy Jake Bethany Passes Away

DALLAS - Former Hardin-Simmons basketball standout Jake Bethany passed away as he was referring a basketball game late Monday.

Bethany, 48, died at R.H. Dedman Memorial Medical Center after collapsing as he prepared for the start of the second half of a high school game.

Bethany played at Hardin-Simmons University from 1979 to 1982 and was a standout player. He was a sixth-round draft pick by the Phoenix Suns in the 1982 NBA Draft.

Bethany later coached basketball at the University of Dallas in the early 1990s. He played his high school basketball at Spruce High School in Dallas.  

Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Family Cathedral of Praise in Mesquite.
