Cowboys Fall Late Against ETBU
RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team lost 8-7 on a walkoff walk to East Texas Baptist in the first round of the American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship on Friday at UT Dallas.

The Cowboys had rallied to take a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth, but the Tigers scored a run in the eighth and then won the game on a bases loaded walk. Jaxon Rader led off the ninth with a single to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Connor Combs was then intentionally walked to set up a double play, but a wild pitch moved the runners up. Zach Compton was then intentionally walked to load the bases and then Zach Gartner drew a four-pitch walk to give the Tigers the win.

ETBU picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the first when Cade Johnson's relay throw on the back end of an attempted inning-ending double play sailed wide of the bag.

Johnson then gave the Cowboys the lead in the second inning with a two-run home run. ETBU answered back with a two-run single by Sumpter and the Tigers had a chance to blow the game open, but HSU got out of the inning on an unconventional triple play. With runners on first and second Rader popped up a bunt and reliever Kyle Barnett caught it and threw to second for two outs and then Sumpter tried to move up from first to second as the Cowboys got the ball back to the pitcher but HSU caught him to end the inning.

The Cowboys retook the lead in the top of the third on a two-run double by Anthony Beasley. ETBU took a 5-4 lead in the fifth with two runs, including a RBI single by Mason Aldredge and another run scored on a balk. The Tigers added a run in the seventh on a Connor Combs sacrifice fly.

Cody Berryman and Colton Parker took two pitches to get the game tied as they hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game at six. HSU then loaded the bases with nobody out and Jace Langen had an RBI single to give HSU the lead, but reliever Logan Sprinkle struck out Taylor Cooling and Zack de Luna to get out of the jam.

Josh Warbington tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a pinch-hit RBI double.

Jeremy Hallmark started and allowed two earned runs in one-plus innings and left the game with an injury. Barnett came on and kept the Cowboys in the game with six and one-third innings of relief. Blake Northrop came on and got out of the eighth and took the loss in the ninth.

Kyle Loson started for the Tigers and allowed four runs in two and two-third innings. Garrett Penny worked four and one-third innings of relief before giving way in the eighth to Sprinkle, who worked the final two innings to improve to 5-1 on the year.

Parker had three hits for the Cowboys and Sumpter led the Tigers with four hits.

HSU is now 19-22 on the year and will play in an elimination game at 10 a.m. on Saturday. ETBU improved to 28-13 on the year and will play in a winner's bracket game at 1 p.m.
