Cowboys Sweep Sul Ross State; Claim Sixth Seed
ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team swept a senior day doubleheader against Sul Ross State, winning 4-2 in the first game and 8-7 in the nightcap on a walkoff home run by Dylan Sweeney.

Game 1

HSU received all of the offense it needed in the bottom of the third inning. Zack de Luna gave the Cowboys a 1-0 lead with an RBI single and Cody Berryman added an RBI double, Colton Parker an RBI single and Dylan Sweeney an RBI double.

The Lobos picked up a Jace Jenkins RBI single in the fourth and Jonathon Bigley had an RBI single in the fifth to cut it to 4-2, but Garrett Johnston got out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth with a double play.

Sul Ross State again loaded the bases in the seventh inning with one out to chase Johnston but Blake Northrop came in and shut the door for his second save of the year.

Johnston came up big for the Cowboys as he did not allow an earned run in six and one-third innings to improve to 5-3. Aaron Marquez allowed four runs in three and one-third innings to fall to 4-3 for Sul Ross State.

All four HSU hits came in that third inning. Chris York and Ryan Almager had three hits each for Sul Ross State.

Game 2

HSU had to rally for the dramatic win in the second game. Sul Ross scored four times in the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead. York had an RBI single in the first and Jonny Campos added a two-run single in the second.

The Cowboys picked up a run in the second when Jace Langen ripped a shot off of starter Justin Martinez hand and Martinez had to leave the game with an injury. Almager had an RBI single in the fourth for the Lobos to make it 5-1.

Taylor Cooling hit his second home run of the series in the bottom of the fourth a three-run shot to left to cut the deficit to 5-4. Almager made it 6-4 with an RBI single in the seventh. HSU tied the game in the bottom of the inning with an RBI groundout by Cade Johnson and a sacrifice fly by Elijah Perez.

Campos gave the Lobos a 7-6 lead with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, but the Cowboys came right back and tied it in the bottom of the eighth on a Cody Berryman RBI double.

Sweeney then led off the ninth with a blast over the right field wall into the north wind to give the Cowboys the sweep. It was his 10th home run of the year.

Ty Engelhardt started and allowed three earned runs in three innings. He was replaced by Kyle Barnett, who ate up five innings allowing three runs. Kyle Johnson came in and worked a scoreless ninth to earn the win and improve to 2-2.

Cooling, Sweeney, Jake Todd and Langen had two hits each for the Cowboys and Wesley Moss, York, Almager, Bigley and Browning all had two hits for the Lobos.

The Cowboys went into the day needing one win to secure a berth in the ASC postseason tournament, and could have finished sixth, seventh, eighth or out of the race. The Cowboys got both wins and the right teams lost and HSU is now the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament next week.

HSU will play East Texas Baptist on Friday at UT-Dallas. UTD and Howard Payne are the other two teams in the four-team bracket. HSU finished the regular season with a record of 19-21 and 11-13 in ASC action. Sul Ross State ends the year at 14-26 overall and 7-17 in league play.
