Cowboys Split Pair at UTD
RICHARDSON, Texas — Hardin-Simmons split a pair of pitching duels to win its series with Texas-Dallas as HSU won the first game on Saturday 3-2 and lost on a walkoff hit 2-1 in the nightcap at the UTD Baseball Complex in Richardson.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Kyle Bartlett went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for HSU. He was making his first start of the year. In the second inning he drove in Troy Nicholson with an RBI single.
He drove in his second run in the fourth inning, when he tripled in Andrew Rehling and he had an RBI single in the sixth to drive in Troy Nicholson who had doubled.
UTD scored a single run in the sixth and it was unearned. Daniel Saxon reached on a two-base error with one out moved to third and eventually scored on separate wild pitches by Blake Sieck.
Sieck went six and one-third innings of four-hit baseball and struck out six allowing two runs (one earned) and just one walk to earn the win. Sieck allowed an RBI double to Kaleb Robinson in the sixth to end his day with one out and one runner on and a 3-2 lead.
Tyler Brunnemann came in and got a ground out and a strikeout to earn his second save of the season.
Jason Fink went six innings and allowed three runs for UTD. He struck out eight and scattered five hits. Max Willard pitched a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts for UTD.
In the second game, Marvin Prestridge went six innings for UTD and allowed one run on five hits and Chase Knight pitched a scoreless seventh inning for UTD to earn the win.
The Comets won the game with single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings. Chase Brown had an RBI double in the sixth and Jacob Guest had an RBI double to knock in Jacob Starnes who had singled to lead off the inning to chase HSU starter Eric Zamora. James Simmons came in and allowed a sacrifice bunt and then Guest had the winning hit.
HSU starter Eric Zamora was solid in his Cowboy pitching debut. He went six plus innings and allowed just two runs and struck out seven but took the hard-luck loss.
HSU scored its lone run in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Jay Hiller.
The Cowboys are 2-1 on the year and will return to action on next Friday at East Texas Baptist. UTD is 1-2 after the season-opening series.
