Cowboys Fall To Wayland Baptist

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons baseball team could not hold down the powerful attack of Wayland Baptist in an 18-7 run-rule loss in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Hunter Field.
Neither team scored in the first inning, but after that it was an offensive explosion. Wayland scored at least two runs in each of the final six innings and score 12 in the final three innings. HSU added two in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth.
J.T. Armstrong doubled to center to lead off the HSU second and with two outs Brian Blare was hit by a pitch and Kevin Ellison walked to load the bases. Brian Weeks followed with a two run single.
Regan Dixon had a solo home run with one out in the third for the Cowboys and Blare had a two-run single later in the inning for HSU. Mike Morgan also had a bases loaded walk in the inning. Dixon led off the fourth inning with a home run and it was the last run of the day for the Cowboys.
Michael Reinhardt took the loss for the Cowboys to fall to 0-2. He allowed nine runs on 10 hits in four and one-third innings of work. Will Burke allowed nine runs out of the bullpen in one and two-third innings of action and Eric Roten worked a scoreless seventh.
Weeks had three hits for the Cowboys and Dixon had the two solo home runs. Todd Jeffress was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Pioneers. Jason Kimzey (2-0) earned the win out of the bullpen with three innings of one-run relief.
The Cowboys fell to 8-6 with the loss and Wayland improved to 20-3. HSU opens conference play against McMurry on Friday at 7 p.m. at Hunter Field.
