Walker Pitches Cowboys By East Texas Baptist

Boxscore

MARSHALL, Texas — Sam Walker pitched into the eighth inning and allowed only four hits and one run to lead the Hardin-Simmons baseball team to a 4-1 win over East Texas Baptist in American Southwest Conference Crossover action on Friday evening in Marshall.

Walker had his second straight strong outing as he went seven plus innings, scattering four hits and striking out seven. Skylar Sillivent got one out in the eighth and gave way to closer Kyle Barton, who recorded the final five outs for the save.

ETBU got on the board first when Bobby Mitchell homered in the bottom of the first, but the Cowboys limited the Tigers to five hits the rest of the game.

HSU took the lead with a three-run second inning. It started innocently enough as Taylor Berlin drew a one-out walk. He was then forced out on a Jaxon Jordan fielder’s choice. Jordan then stole second and Bryan Blare drove him in with two outs. Kevin Ellison followed with a single to right center and then Brian Weeks drove them both in with a triple to centerfield.

Neither team mounted much offense the rest of the way, but the Cowboys did add an insurance run in the eighth. Berlin reached on an error and Mike Morgan pinch ran for him. Jordan sacrificed Morgan to second with a bunt and Blare doubled to right to drive in Morgan.

Blare had two hits and drove in two runs and Matt Roam also had two hits for the Cowboys.

HSU is now 2-4 on the year and East Texas Baptist fell to 5-2. The two teams will play a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
